Abstract: With the opening up of the economy and the rapidly changing lifestyle, tastes and habits of the people in the rural areas, there is a wide scope for consumers’ cooperatives in the hitherto neglected rural sector. But, how far can cooperative consumer stores successfully tap the emerging rural market? The present study is a case study of Warana Bazar – the first rural cooperative consumers’ store of the country. The case reveals how enlightened leadership and good management can be instrumental in making such ventures a reality and a viable proposition.
