Title: Double Loop Process: The Next Innovation Paradigm

Abstract: Expanding on the toolkit approach to innovation that has been introduced recently by Thomke and von Hippel, this article postulates that a double loop process is its main implication. Due to a similarity to Concurrent Engineering (CE) (including the concurrent evolution of related markets for technologies) in the past, it is, therefore, labelled CE II in order to forecast its future trajectory. Just as CE expanded global consumer markets for engineering products, CE II is poised to expand base-of-pyramid (BOP) markets around the world through software intensive products. With R&D the new industrial "mantra" and India's software industry well placed to spearhead inroads into BOP markets while contributing to local socio-economic development, CE II should be given serious consideration by Indian management.
