Abstract: The paper discusses the extent and depth of economic fluctuations across selected countries during the Great Depression and the last four or five decades. Also, it analyses the possible causes of all major business cycles, the roles that the fiscal and monetary policies have played to counter them, and the inherent limitations of these policies in getting rid of all such fluctuations. A simple statistical analysis suggests that the stabilizing policies were not often applied to counter business cycles.
