Title: How Much Should a Person Consume?

Abstract: This article examines different perspectives on the consumption-environment debate. It argues that whereas the American environmental movement has generally disregarded the causes and consequences of over-consumption, the issue has been at the centre of German debates. It also shows the precocity of Mahatma Gandhi in this regard. The paper concludes with suggestions on mitigating the consumption gap between the rich and the poor and rich and poor countries.
