Abstract: IT-enabled Services (ITES), which is one kind of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is on a rapid growth path in India with huge economic benefits to both parent and sub-contracting firms but with loss of jobs in the US. This paper traces the economic logic for outsourcing with arguments built from the sub-contracting literature. It argues that outsourcing is here to stay but with temporary aberrations. It examines the strategic implications of ITES with the help of three brief case studies and closes with a discussion of the strategic options available to Indian ITES firms.
