Title: An Analysis of the Property Rights of Forest Dependent Communities: The Indian Context

Abstract: The Indian State has taken systematic measures to improve the property rights of the forest dependent communities since 1990. This paper seeks to examine the relevance and correctness of the policy initiatives of the State. It is argued that property rights enable the forest dependent communities to earn higher incomes from alternative livelihoods and lessen their dependence on forest-based resources. An analysis of a case study based on social entrepreneurship is presented to strengthen the arguments.
