Abstract: This essay explores the consequences of the non-profitness and non-governmentness, the two distinguishing features of NGOs vis--vis for-profit businesses and public bureaucracies. It situates the arguments about the advantages conferred on NGOs by these two features in the Indian NGO sector and critically examines them to understand their relevance in the current context.
