Title: Competitiveness of India’s Micro and Small Enterprises through Functional Competencies: Role in Nation’s Development
Authors: Ravulaparthy Ramarao
Issue/Year: Jan-2012
Section: Notes and Commentaries
Abstract: MSEs have been the growth engines of industry in India during the ’80s and the ’90s. However, despite investments by Indian and foreign multinationals, the critical issue of employment generation could not be addressed adequately. Growth of MSEs can happen in two routes: continuing to attract large industries dependant on ancillaries and concurrently encouraging independent SMEs in areas of core competence in the form of clusters and export-oriented sectors. This study reveals that the contribution of Indian MSEs is not to its full potential and do not compare with that in nations like China. This is attributable to lack of functional competencies in MSEs, dismal implementation of policies framed by government and the absence of focused and meaningful interaction between both the sides. This paper attempts to elucidate some of the competency impediments in formulating and implementing the strategies towards this goal and also suggests some possible solutions to address the concerns and overcome the barriers by building the critical functional competencies required.
